たとえば道を歩いていて突然、見ず知らずの人から「私はあなたを殺すつもりはない」と言われたとしたらどうなるか。あなたの中にその人から殺される可能性が突然芽生える。しかしその人は、文字どおりあなたを殺すつもりがないから「私はあなたを殺すつもりはない」と、心にあるがままを正直に表明しただけなのだ。しかしあなたは「そんなはずはない」と言い返すだろう。「あなたに私を殺すつもりが微塵もないとしたらどうしてそんなことを言うのか。本当にわずかとはいえ、私を殺す可能性を感じたからこそそう言ったんじゃないのか」と。こういう議論が人工知能相手に可能かどうかわからないが、人間の場合間違いなく、「私はあなたを殺すつもりはない」と言われた途端にその可能性が心に放り込まれる。その心に放り込まれたものは、その後どれだけ強い否定語を重ねても完全に消し去ることができない。
